Garnishment

« Back to Glossary Index

Garnishment is a legal process in which a creditor or government agency collects payment for a debt owed by taking a portion of the debtor’s wages, bank account balances, or other assets.

This process is typically used when the debtor has failed to pay their debts and the creditor or government agency has obtained a court order allowing them to collect the owed funds through garnishment.

The amount of funds that can be garnished depends on various factors such as the type of debt, the debtor’s income, and applicable laws in the jurisdiction where the garnishment is taking place.
