A tax extension, also known as an extension of time to file, is a request made to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns.
Taxpayers who are unable to file their tax returns by the original due date can request an extension, which typically gives them an additional six months to file. It’s important to note that an extension of time to file does not grant an extension of time to pay any taxes owed.
Taxpayers are still required to estimate their tax liability and pay any taxes due by the original due date of the tax return, even if they have been granted an extension to file.
