Payroll Taxes

« Back to Glossary Index

Payroll taxes are taxes that are paid on wages and salaries. Employers are responsible for withholding and remitting these taxes to the government on behalf of their employees.

Payroll taxes include Social Security and Medicare taxes, as well as federal and state income taxes in some cases. Social Security and Medicare taxes are collectively known as FICA taxes and are used to fund these programs for retirees, disabled individuals, and those with limited income.
